Burg Hohenzollern in Winter
Burg Hohenzollern in the winter, painted in acrylic on canvas.
The castle sits above the wooded hill, with the snow mostly catching along the tips and upper surfaces of the vegetation rather than covering the landscape completely. I wanted the hill to still read as green and textured beneath the snow, while the castle stayed small against the much larger sky.
Notes
The foreground was built up with thicker, more textured paint, while the sky and distant hill were kept comparatively loose. The snow was added as broken, uneven highlights to suggest it resting on the vegetation instead of forming a flat white layer.
The result is less about a precise architectural rendering of the castle and more about the hill, the winter light, and the contrast between the bright sky and the darker landscape.
Based on this actual image I took of Burg Hohenzollern in February 2020.
